Why I Hate Bolin

A lot of people seem to think that Bolin is a great guy, and that he and Korra would make a good couple. I disagree.

Reasons people like Bolin include that he can make Korra laugh, he’s more friendly and approachable than Mako, he’s clearly interested in Korra (unlike his standoffish brother), and he stayed friends with her even after getting rejected, which apparently demonstrates that he cares about her as a person and is not just in it for sex. Let’s examine these reasons.

Okay, yes, he makes her laugh, and that is a nice quality to have in a boyfriend, but not when it’s the only thing he’s got going for him. And it is pretty much the only thing he’s got going for him. The next two reasons can be summarized as “he’s slightly better than his brother.” If that’s how you feel about it, I don’t feel the need to argue the point; however, if the main reason you’re with someone is “he’s less of a jerk than so-and-so” then maybe it’s time to reexamine your relationship.

And honestly, Bolin is a jerk. When Bolin first meets Korra, he quite obviously implies to the owner of the gym that he and Korra are a couple. When Korra calls him out on it he denies it, but in the very next scene, when we meet Mako, Mako tells Bolin to stop bringing his “crazy fangirls” to their locker room before the matches, and Bolin insists that he’s got a really good feeling about this one. This establishes that Bolin makes a habit of using his pro-bender status to bed women, usually a different woman every night with no serious commitment. It also indicates that he has disregarded Korra’s statement that they are just friends, not “together together,” because he figures that watching the match will make her clothes fall off.

After the match, Korra expresses an interest in learning more about the pro-bending fighting style, and Bolin offers to show her some moves. It is clear from his tone that he sees this as an opportunity to spend some time alone with her and try to seduce her, rather than as a serious learning experience for her. It is remarkably similar to the time when the Wolfbat team’s waterbender offers to give her some pointers, except that Bolin wasn’t invading her personal space bubble while saying it. Most people agree that the Wolfbat guy was being a skeeze, but people give Bolin points for being “open about his intentions” from the beginning. As far as I can tell, the only real difference here is that the show tells us that Bolin is a friendly guy and that the Wolfbat guy is a jerk, but if you ignore what you’re told and focus on what you’re shown, they give eerily similar first impressions.

Also, Bolin is jealous. Now, I understand that everyone can be a bit jealous, and Korra certainly wasn’t thrilled when she found out about Asami, but she made an effort to appear happy for Mako and politely excused herself when she could no longer keep up the act, which is a pretty mature way to handle the situation (rather surprising coming from Korra, I know). On the other hand, when Bolin sees Korra receive a gift from another guy, his first reaction is “Is this guy bothering you?” with an offer to beat him up. When Korra tells him it’s not like that and it’s just some old guy from the council, he relaxes and says that he likes that much better. First of all, Bolin has no claim on Korra, so he has no business getting uppity about another guy sending her gifts. Second, getting upset to the point that he wants to beat the other guy up is not a good thing. Dating someone who is that possessive can actually be dangerous, and if he is that possessive when they are just friends, imagine how much worse it could get if they were actually a couple. And third, the offer to beat the guy up for her contains the hidden assumption that she can’t handle the matter herself. She is clearly doing just fine with saying no repeatedly, and if she were to decide that it was necessary to smack him around a bit, she has demonstrated that she is quite capable of that.

And as for the fact that he stayed friends with her after being rejected, he really wasn’t given any choice in the matter. Left to his own devices, he would have spent the next two weeks wallowing in misery and noodles. The only reason he doesn’t is that his brother shows up and carries him out of the restaurant to make sure he goes to the semifinal match that evening, and after the match Korra makes a point of apologizing for hurting his feelings. Considering that they have just qualified for the final match in the tournament, the only practical thing for him to do is remain on friendly terms with her.

So basically, Bolin is not the great guy that so many people think he is, and it pisses me off when people talk about how sweet he is, because he is selfish, possessive, immature, and a bit of a creep. And I don’t like Mako any better (I’ll probably write that post at some point). Korra does not need a ship. Waterbenders can sail just fine under their own power.

[[ Let me just address a few of these things because you obviously aren’t watching the same show that everyone else is watching. ]]

1. Bolin’s ability to make someone laugh is by far not the only thing he has going for him. He genuinely cared about Korra and viewed her as someone that was equal to him; strong, talented, beautiful, etc. He’s an incredibly broke kid who grew up on the streets and he managed to get a little bit of money for the girl he liked and bought her a rose and a cupcake. I repeat: HE’S POOR. He goes the extra mile, way out of his way, to make the other person happy, and actually gives a shit about their feelings instead of just dating them because he can.

2. Nobody was using “he’s better than so-and-so” as an excuse for Korra to date him. The only reason you’ve seen people saying that around here on Tumblr is because of ship wars, where they actually are comparing different ships and comparing who’s better than who for Korra. So yes, they are going to say that he’s better than so-and-so. They aren’t saying that it’s the only reason Korra and Bolin should be together, they’re simply using that to back up their ship in the fact that Korra would be happier with Bolin instead of so-and-so. It’s all about ship wars there.

3. Bolin implied Korra and he were together as partially a joke, but more-so to convince Toza that he was with him so that he didn’t have to kick her out. Yes, he invited fangirls in all the time, but you have no grounds to assume that it was ‘to bed them’. That’s just ridiculous. If you think that Bolin actually just sleeps with random women, then again, you obviously are not watching the same show that everyone else is watching. That is your own twisted logic coming into play. When he said that he had a good feeling about her it in no way implied that he just wanted to fuck her, he just had a good feeling about her, that maybe she was someone that he could actually end up liking instead of a crazy fangirl that was just obsessing over the Fire Ferrets as a whole. Plus, the line was sorta just put in there because the creators and juicing Korra up with parallels, and it was a parallel to Katara saying she had a good feeling about Aang. Did that mean that Katara wanted to fuck Aang’s brains out right then and there? No. So don’t assume that just because a guy says it, it means that he wants to fuck her. Yay sexism!

4. Again, you are just seeing things how you want to see them when you think that Bolin just wants to get Korra alone so that he can hit her up, by showing her probending moves. He acknowledged that she was a bender who just wanted to actually learn some moves. In a way you’re insinuating that Korra gave off the vibe that she did just want to fuck him behind the scenes, which is kinda hate on Korra’s part. Simply enough, Bolin just isn’t that type of guy.

5. Bolin wasn’t completely jealous that Korra was receiving gifts from another man. Sure, it may have been there a little bit, but it wasn’t the reason he gave the reaction he gave. He jokingly asked if she wanted him to ‘beat him up’ because she was obviously really bothered by him sending gifts. She blatantly said ‘you can tell tarrlok to shove it’ so naturally Bolin is going to be concerned that someone is bothering Korra, and obviously had been for a while. It was simple concern mixed with a joking ‘lol i’ll beat him up for you if you want’ kinda thing. Not “OH SHE GOT GIFTS FROM ANOTHER GUY IMMA FUCK HIM UP”. I don’t know how that wasn’t made clear.

6. Bolin wouldn’t have stayed being a moping, depressive wreck if it weren’t for Mako. He would have been to the match and he still would’ve been okay with it in the same amount of time. He wouldn’t miss a match for the world because it would upset Mako, and he would do anything to please Mako. Probending is all he has. And Bolin didn’t remain friends with her because he was forced to. He really loves just being in her company and he respected her enough to show his support in her happiness. Hell, that idea gets shot down by the fact that he is still friends with Korra even now that the tournament is over. He just wants Korra to be happy and if that means being with his brother then he will allow that because he wants her to be happy. He acknowledges that Korra doesn’t like him, so he begins to move on, for her. He’s not the type to impose himself on her because he likes her, not giving a shit about what she wants. He just isn’t.

7. Bolin is not selfish, possessive, immature, or a creep. He’s the exact opposite. Just because you see him most of the time relishing in his own good looks and being silly, doesn’t mean that’s all there is to him. There’s a thing called character development. For all you know, there’s a heart wrenching reason why he acts silly all the time and why he constantly makes it a point to talk about how ‘beautiful’ he is. Sort of how the same idea applies to people in real life. Like when they say when someone laughs all the time at everything and makes a joke about everything it actually means they’re depressed. Things like that. Take the time to get to know him. Analyze his past and maybe then you’ll see why he acts the way he does. You’re judging a book by its cover and it’s sort of ill. You have no idea what Bolin’s been through that has made him this way today. Wait until the end of the series to put out such unsubstantial opinions about a character that you know so little about.
